There will be no Bay Bridge Walk again this year. It is the fifth consecutive year the popular event has not been held. MdTA spokesperson Kelly Melhem said the walk across the east span of the Bay Bridge, which normally takes place in May, is not being held “due to ongoing cost-containment measures requiring the limiting of expenditures to core activities.”
The first Bay Bridge Walk was held in 1975, when the two-lane eastbound bridge was closed to traffic to allow thousands of walkers to make the four-mile trek over the Bay. During the walks, two-way traffic operated on the westbound span. Bay Bridge Walks were canceled in 2007 because of bad weather and in 2008 and 2009 because of the extensive renovations that were then taking place. A walk was not held in 2010 because of the remaining construction work and the economic situation.
