The Color of Birds

This class will present types of colors and patterns in birds, including disruptive coloration, banner markings, field marks, and pigmentation. The field work will emphasize coloration by locating birds that are exemplary of these adaptations.

• May 18, 6:00-7:30 pm
Nests: Construction and Location

This class will involve learning about various types of nests, including nesting materials utilized in construction of the nests, size, shape and location of nests.

• May 27, 5:30-7:00 pm
Nestlings in Hand

This class involves banding nestlings, data recording, and learning about nestling development.

• June 5, 6:30-8:00 am
Bird Chatter

Rise early to learn about bird sounds. This is the most active time of the day for hearing bird conversation, song, location notes and alarm calls. Distinguish the sounds of at least 15 species.

• June 9, 5:30-7:00 pm
Identify Birds: Sight, Sound and Sign

The focus is on identification ranging from hearing the bird through knowing the bird by its excrement. A full spectrum of bird facts will aid in identification of birds found throughout the backyard.

• June 15, 6:00-7:30 pm
Osprey: Chicks on Board

Visit five sites on CBEC property to observe and learn the behavior of osprey nestlings. Ospreys’ behavior on the nest is preparatory behavior for life in the wild.

• June 30, 6:30-8:00 pm
Primping with a Purpose

Learn how birds maintain feathers, keep clean, molt, grow new feathers, and keep in tip-top shape for flight and attracting mates.
