Blue Dog Cafe continues its history of offering the Eastern Shore world-class entertainment by presenting the hilarious two-man stage show Super Spectacular! To Opera, With Love at Blue Dog Café in Snow Hill on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 6:00 P.M. featuring The Donovan Ensemble from New York City. Super Spectacular! To Opera, With Love is 6 classic operas performed by 2 showmen in roughly an hour’s time, but with a twist. This is Broadway meets Vaudeville to create one amazing and hilarious on-stage show.
Blue Dog Cafe is proud to bring The Donovan Ensemble to Snow Hill for the first time ever. Super Spectacular! To Opera, With Love is the story of has-been (really never was) actor Merril Garrick (played by Joe Kolbow) preparing for a big comeback with the help and occasional hindrance of his sidekick Emmet (played by Johnnie Niel). Super Spectacular! was first performed in Union City, New Jersey and has since been performed in Tennessee, Wisconsin, New York and Canada where it was called, “A glorious, fabulous show,” by Uptown Magazine and “…absolutely hilarious,” by CBC Winnipeg. Super Spectacular! was awarded “Best in Fest” for Kansas City and Minnesota Fringe and has also appeared in New York City at Dixon Place and the New York International Clown Festival.
Joe Kolbow is co-artistic director of The Donovan Ensemble. Joe created the character Merril Garrick for their last show Super Spectacular! Stage credits include Tina Howe’s New York premiere of Skin Deep at 59E59, The Minnesota Opera, The Illusion Theater, The History Theater and The Alabama Shakespeare Festival: Arcadia (Valentine), Comedy of Errors (Antipholus of Syracuse) Macbeth (Lennox). Mr. Kolbow has MFA from the University of Alabama and a B.A. from St. Olaf College. Additional training includes The Actor’s Center and The Wynn Handman Studio in New York City, as well as Ecole Philippe Gaulier in Paris.
Johnnie Niel is co-artistic director of The Donovan Ensemble and created the role of Emmet in Super Spectacular!. Johnnie sang seven seasons with The Minnesota Opera, danced his way through Central America performing with dance-theater troupe Shawn McConneloug and Her Orchestra, and hoofed his way to Boston tapping with Joe Chvala and His Flying Foot Forum. Mr. Niel holds a B.A. from Centenary College of Louisiana and a M.A. in Theater /Speech from Louisiana Tech University. Johnnie also studied at Ecole Philippe Gaulier in Paris.
