Body of Missing Man Recovered from Chester River

Maryland Natural Resources Police recovered the body of 47-year-old James Schmidt. Officials say Schmidt was out on a boat fishing with his 7-year-old nephew and the boy’s grandfather near Buckingham Landing. The 7-year-old jumped into the river to get cool from the heat and was holding on to the boat’s swim platform when he was swept away by the river’s current. Schmidt then jumped in the water to save his nephew and also was swept away. The grandfather called 911 for help. A nearby NRP officer rushed to the scene immediately say the 7-year-old going under the surface of the water and pulled him to safety. The youngster was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Officials say Schmidt’s body was later recovered and then taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Baltimore.
