Both Cuba and Spain boast roots in the lovely slow tempo Bolero dance. Taking many forms since its creation in the late eighteen hundreds, it has been popular in all its forms for over a century. Beginner Bolero classes begin at the Centre for the Arts in Centreville, Maryland on March 24 at 7 pm.  Beginning students will be taught the basic steps, rhythm and technique of the dance. Singles and couples are welcome to this four-week course with Ballroom Dance Champion Amanda Showell. The deadline for registration is March 18. The class fee is $50 for members of the Queen Anne’s County Arts Council, or $55 for non members.

At 8 pm on the same night, students who want to master Swing dancing can join Showell for a four-week course that is oriented toward advanced beginners. This extremely fun dance evolved from the 1920’s to 1940’s influenced heavily by the jazz music of the time, with the Lindy Hop possibly being the most known dance of the many variations of swing.
Instructor Amanda Showell has taught at some of the largest dance schools on the east coast, having coached the dance teams of both Princeton University and the University of Delaware. A teacher since 1996, she has won numerous ballroom dance competition titles and trained with World Class dancers such as Peter Eggleton and Charlotte Jorgensen.

The Centre for the arts classes are designed to renew existing artistic interests, and to develop new skills.
