Bosom Buddies Pledges $88,000 to Shore Regional Breast Center

Bosom Buddies 2 (400 x 270)Bosom Buddies Charities, Inc. recently pledged $88,000 to the Shore Regional Breast Center for the purchase of a BioVision Faxitron® specimen radiography system, the latest technology for the treatment and care of breast cancer patients.

The purchase of this technology would not have been possible without the generous donation from Bosom Buddies Charities, Inc. An organization based in Queen Anne’s County, the mission of Bosom Buddies is to promote breast cancer awareness, encourage early detection, support treatment and celebrate healing. The Bosom Buddies Ball, held annually in January, is the charity’s main fundraiser, raising funds which are donated to community services and organizations that embody its mission.

When performing a surgical procedure on a breast cancer patient, x-ray imaging of the removed sample is the standard of care because it provides the surgeon with pertinent information related to the patient’s condition. Prior to the Faxitron® technology, samples would be sent to radiology for analysis after which the radiologist would call back to the operating room to provide the surgeon with a report. Depending on the results, removal of additional breast tissue may have been necessary, thus the need for additional testing, while the patient was still under anesthesia.

The BioVision Faxitron® allows the surgeon to take an x-ray of the sample and analyze it within the operating room. This reduces the time in the operating room and helps minimize the potential for future surgeries. Having this technology in the operating room reduces delays in the analysis of breast tissue samples and ultimately reduces the anesthesia time for the patient. In addition, the images are stored within the machine and kept as part of the patient’s medical record.

“The average time to see the image using the Faxitron® is 1.9 minutes compared to 15.8 minutes used when taking the specimen out of the operating room,” comments Roberta Lilly, MD, MPH, Medical Director at Shore Regional Breast Center. “Using this machine is truly part of patient-centered care since it reduces the amount of time that a patient needs to be under anesthesia. It also allows more efficient use of the operating room since the Faxitron® shortens the case length, making it possible to care for more patients in the course of a day.”

“The creation of Bosom Buddies Charities was a labor of love,” says Susan Ponchock, founder and 17-year breast cancer survivor. “Seven years later, thanks to our many sponsors, supporters and volunteers, we have raised over $1.3 million to bring state-of-the-art equipment, educational programs and counseling services to the citizens of our local communities. We are gratified to see the expansion of expert medical personnel in our region to more efficiently and effectively provide the treatment and care needed by those diagnosed with breast cancer.”

Dr. Lilly adds, “To this day, I am mindfully grateful to this generous group of women that comprise Bosom Buddies Charities. I never use the Faxitron® without saying a big ‘Thank you’ to Bosom Buddies.”

Shore Regional Breast Center provides services for breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and support enabling women to make informed decisions about their care and treatment plan when faced with this diagnosis.
