Capital improvements at Rock Hall’s Haven Harbour Marina Raise The Bar, Again

As the nation’s more than 75 million boating enthusiasts look to the beginning of the 2012 boating season, one regional marina, Haven Harbour Marina of Rock Hall, MD., is busy at work on its latest capital improvement project to enhance its facility, well-known by generations of Mid-Atlantic recreational and transient boaters. The project will be completed by April 1.

Capital improvements underway include:

•Removing and replacing Red Dock, one of its three docks. Specifically, the contractor, Dissen & Juhn Company, Stevensville, MD., is removing the existing 400 LF fixed timber pier and replacing it with a state-of-the-art floating dock, manufactured by Sullivan Flotation Systems. About 70 slips, mostly 45′ and 50′ slips with full-length finger piers will be installed along with a few 40′ and 30′ slips. All the new finger piers will be stable 4′ wide structures that will stand about 20″ above the water. The dock will include both tie pilings between each finger pier and midship pilings for spring lines.
•Dredging the entire area to 6.5′ mean low water (MLW). The contractor, Lindstrom Excavating, will dredge approximately 12,000 CY. Dissen & Juhn Company will also be called upon to reach inside the existing slips with their large crane and dig out each slip to over -6’ mlw. The new design layout for Red Dock will allow a minimum of 1-½ times the length of the slip for maneuverability in front of the slip.
•Upgrade utility systems and fuel dock. A new cast aluminum lighthouse style pedestal will service each slip with ball valves for freshwater. The electrical system will be upgraded to supply up to 1600 amps to the 70 new slips. The fuel dock building will be upgraded to increase capacity and to provide a modern fuel system monitoring and accounting system. The electrical and fuel contractors are Relay Electric Company of Chestertown, MD., and Coastal Pump & Tank of Harrington, DE., respectively.
