CBMM Offers Summer Workshops and Paddling Program

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, MD is offering woodworking classes, paddling programs, and a children’s art workshop this summer.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8pm on July 10, 12, 17 and 19, CBMM’s women shipwrights are offering a ladies-only class in the basics of woodworking, with no prior experience necessary. Learn the foundational skills, tools, and techniques of carpentry. The cost for all four sessions is $60 for members and $75 for non-members. Pre-registration is required and participants must be 18 years or older unless accompanied by an adult.

On Friday, July 20 through Sunday, July 21, craftsman John T. Garlick will lead a three-day trailboard carving workshop in which participants learn the techniques and artistry of Chesapeake trailboard carving while developing the concepts and skills needed to make their own unvarnished signboard. Pre-registration is required for the session which runs July 20 from 6-9pm, July 21 from 9am-5pm, and July 22 from 9am-3pm and costs $40 for members and $50 for non-members. Children ages 12 and up are encouraged to participate with an accompanying adult.

On Thursday, July 12 and Thursday, August 9, CBMM is teaming up with Sultana Projects to offer an interpretive paddling program on the Miles River. From 9:30am-12noon, participants are invited to join Sultana vice president and naturalist Chris Cerino as he explores the history and environment of the museum and its surrounding creeks, marshes, and beaches by water. Kayaks are provided, although personal kayaks are permissible. The cost is $35 per person. Children ages 12 and up are welcome to participate with an adult in a personal tandem kayak. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

On Saturday, July 14, a children’s art workshop taught by Elaine Thompsen, children’s art teacher and author of “You Can Draw Me: Chesapeake Sea Life and More” is available in two sessions; 9:30-11:30am for ages 9-12 and 1-3pm for ages 5-8. Each participant will create a work of art to take home, as well as signed copy of Thompsen’s book. The cost is $25 for members and $30 for non-members with pre-registration required.
