Character Counts! and CommUNITY Mentoring Celebrate Volunteers

By: Ashley Winterstein

With 110 character coaches, 10 mentors, and countless other volunteer support staff, the Character Counts! Advisory Council and CommUNITY Mentoring Board have much to be thankful for this year. These generous volunteers are the reason the Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship) have reached thousands of students in Queen Anne’s County over the past twelve years and particular students have been able to receive positive individual attention to help them reach their full potential.

For this reason, the two boards wanted to take an evening to recognize and personally thank their many volunteers with a Celebration and Dinner at the Community Services Building on May 10, 2012. This year’s celebration was in memory of Sheriff Charles Crossley – a dedicated character coach for many years.

The total volunteer hours for 2011-2012 reached 6,760 hours with an associated value of $108,385.20! For their many hours of hard work and commitment, the volunteers in attendance were treated to a catered dinner and each was recognized with a certificate and Character Counts! insulated lunch box. The Queen Anne’s County Dance Troupe also performed some of their most recent dance routines during the dinner.

Jacki Carter, Character Counts! Coordinator, remarked about the celebration, “This evening was special to me as it was the first public event where both our character coaches, mentors and board members came together as a big family. The location at Community Services was an ideal location providing a beautiful, relaxing environment. I am very proud of our volunteers and their commitment to our children and youth. Our volunteers make Character Counts! a well-known respected initiative in Queen Anne’s County. I honor that beautiful light in all of them.”

The Character Counts! Advisory Council and CommUNITY Mentoring Board would like to thank the character coaches, mentors, and other volunteers that gave so freely of their time to build better citizens. They would also like to thank the school and community support that has made this initiative not only possible, but successful.
