The Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office will be among many law enforcement agencies participating in the National Impaired Driving Crackdown due to the month of August being identified as one of the deadliest months statewide for traffic fatalities and overall crashes. Queen Anne’s County’s data indicates that males ages 18-35 are among the most at risk for being involved in an impaired driving crash. Alcohol related crashes accounted for 12.7 percent of all crashes in Queen Anne’s County in 2008. Queen Anne’s County is the 3rd of 24 jurisdictions for alcohol consumption in our state.
Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office has developed a comprehensive enforcement and education campaign in coordination with the Traffic Safety Coordinator, the Maryland State Police and the Maryland Transportation Authority Police. There will be sobriety check points conducted along with many Saturation Patrols to remove motorists from the roadways who have made a seriously bad choice to drive after drinking.
Our Local businesses that serve alcohol have been asked to participate by assuring that a designated driver program is in place along with responsible serving of alcohol to their patrons. Local residents are encouraged to report impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1 or #77.
“Our goal is to have zero impaired driving fatalities in the month of August”, stated Sheriff Gary Hofmann, I ask for everyone’s cooperation to be responsible and if you drink do not drive. I encourage reporting those drivers that you suspect of being under the influence and who are creating a danger to you and other motorists”.
