The Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra (CYSO) proudly announces the appointment of Mrs. Dana Shieh as the new Director and Conductor of the Preparatory Strings Orchestra. This position is a cornerstone of the CYSO program, where young musicians first develop the essential fundamentals of reading music and learning their instruments.

Mrs. Shieh brings over 30 years of teaching and performing experience to CYSO. She currently serves as Director of Fine Arts at Bishop McNamara High School, and previously led the orchestra program at Thomas G. Pullen Arts Academy in Prince George’s County. Her career has included maintaining a large private violin and viola studio, as well as performing throughout the Washington, D.C. area with ensembles such as the National Philharmonic, Annapolis Symphony, and Maryland Symphony.

She holds a Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance from Columbus State University, where she studied under Manuel Diaz and Patricio Cobos, and a Master of Music Education from Florida State University. In addition to her teaching and performance background, Mrs. Shieh has adjudicated All-State and Solo & Ensemble Festivals, evaluated regional orchestra events, and guest conducted several county honor orchestras.

This is where the foundation of our students’ musical journey begins, and Mrs. Shieh’s leadership will ensure they receive the strongest possible start.”

Mrs. Shieh resides in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, with her husband, Chris, and their two sons, Ryan and David.

With her extensive background and passion for teaching, Mrs. Shieh will provide a welcoming and inspiring environment for CYSO’s youngest musicians as they take their first steps in orchestral music.
