Chestertown’s mayor has proposed a ban on plastic bags and has given a draft of the proposed ordinance to members of the Town Council. Mayor Margo Bailey promoted the ban as part of her green agenda. She says she pursued a statewide ban with the local delegation, but they opposed it, and the bill died in committee. Town Councilman Marty Stetson says the proposed ordinance is good in principle, but worries that companies that supply the bags to stores, or the stores themselves, could sue. Councilman Gibson Anthony suggested that the draft ordinance be checked for provisions that potentially lead to litigation.
