According to Chestertown Police Chef Rob Edler photos taken from speed cameras in school zones resulted in more than 700 citations in the month of May. Most of them were generated in front of the Chestertown Christian Academy. The school zone speed camera is housed in a Ford Escape and operates Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Any vehicle going 12mph over the speed limit in a posted school zone receives a $40 citation in the mail, but no points on their driver’s license. Edler said that even though it is summer and school is not in session, most schools have ongoing summer activities. To make sure accurate citations are being issued, RedSpeed, the company that owns the camera, has a three step checklist it follows. First the digital image is looked at by an employee to filter out any emergency vehicles with lights on, then the image is checked by a supervisor and finally it is sent electronically to the Chestertown Police Department. Using a special software program, officers can check yes or no to issue the violation. RedSpeed pays for all the printing, mailing, and postage.
