Choptank Transport Helps Deliver Meals to Children and Seniors

PRESTON, MARYLAND – June 25, 2020, It’s a familiar sight on local roads—the grey Ford Transit, affectionally known as “the Chopvan.” It’s Choptank Transport’s goodwill ambassador on wheels, and during the COVID-19 crisis, it has come to the rescue, joining the fleet of vehicles delivering meals to local children and elderly stuck at home during the pandemic.
When the pandemic forced the closing of schools in mid-March, Caroline County Public Schools (CCPS) remained committed to providing healthy meals for its students. The delivery of these meals has continued through the summer meal program and has expanded to include local seniors in need.
“We put together over a thousand bags a day and deliver to 23 different sites,” said Beth Brewster, Supervisor of Food Services at CCPS. “We needed help. I knew Choptank Transport had been involved in community initiatives helping local children with food insecurity. So with the current meal program, I immediately thought to ask if we could use the Chopvan.”
To date, the program has delivered an impressive 174,500 meals to children and 41,600 meals to seniors. Four days a week, at breakfast, lunch and dinner, the food arrives at the doorsteps of those in need. In addition, Caroline Helping Hands weekend backpack program, funded by Food for Learning and the Caroline Foundation, has provided 15,000 backpacks during the COVID-19 crisis. Watch the video:
“Choptank Transport has always aspired to be a civic-minded member of its community,” said Choptank President and CEO Geoff Turner. “And since we are all about transportation, what better way to help our neighbors in these difficult times than by deploying the Chopvan to help transport meals to our Caroline County neighbors?”
