Myron Szczukowski, MD, an orthopedic surgeon on the Shore Health System medical staff and medical director of the Joint Replacement Center at the Memorial Hospital at Easton, has been named chief of the Shore Health medical staff.
Dr. Szczukowski, the 2010 winner of the Shore Health System Arthur B. Cecil, Jr., MD Award for Excellence in Healthcare Improvement, is the first solo chief of staff for the combined medical staffs of the Memorial Hospital at Easton and Dorchester General Hospital. Patrick O’Brien, MD, who is an obstetrician and gynecologist, was named Vice Chief of the Shore Health medical staff.
Dr. Szczukowski, elected by a vote of the medical staff, will serve a two-year term, with the option to serve two additional two-year terms.
“Dr. Szczukowski has provided significant leadership on the medical staff for several years, and recently led the effort to revamp and revise the Medical Staff Bylaws,” said Michael Tooke, MD, Chief Medical Officer for Shore Health System. “He enjoys widespread support and respect from his colleagues, and his election as Chief of Staff is a reflection of that regard.”
Department chairpersons under the previous medical structure are now known as Section Chiefs; elected by their specialty colleagues, they include Bruce Helmly, MD, Chief of Medical Specialties; Dennis DeShields, MD, Chief of Medicine; Dennis Forbes, MD, Chief of Anesthesia; Phil Bowman, MD, Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology; Betsy Mason, MD, Chief of Pediatrics; Chris Levey, MD, Chief of Radiology; Jack Foley, MD, Chief of Surgery; and Salvatore Verteramo, MD, Chief of Emergency Medicine. A designated at-large seat on the Medical Executive Committee has been reserved for a physician who primarily practices at Dorchester General Hospital. For the current term, that physician is cardiologist Brendan Paltoo, MD.
