Chestertown is looking for a new police chief. Town Manager Bill Ingersoll announced at the town council meeting that Chief Robert Edler is planning to retire. He said that Edler has not given the town a firm date, but that the retirement could become effective as early as November 19. Edler could not be reached for comment. A 24-year veteran of the force, Edler was appointed chief in April 2009, after a year as acting chief following the retirement of Walter Coryell. He was one of 13 candidates for the position, beating out applicants from as far away as Florida, Massachusetts and Ohio, as well as from nearby counties. Edler also served as acting chief in 2000-01, during the search that resulted in Coryell’s hiring.
