EXPLORATION OF CULTURE, THOUGHTFUL DISCUSSION, AND LIVE MUSIC: ONE MARYLAND ONE BOOK PROGRAMS AT KENT COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY

805EXPLORATION OF CULTURE, THOUGHTFUL DISCUSSION, AND LIVE MUSIC: ONE MARYLAND ONE BOOK PROGRAMS AT KENT COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY

This year’s One Maryland One Book selection, The Distance Between Us: A Memoir by Reyna Grande contains themes that relate to emigration, the immigrant experience, cultural diversity, and the idea of home. In addition to being a shared reading experience, One Maryland One Book is designed to use literature to spur community conversations by bringing people together to discuss the book and explore its themes. Kent County Public Library is pleased to be offering five programs designed to do just that.

Wednesday, September 17, 5:30pm, Chestertown Branch

I’m Not From Around Here

Making the choice to leave your country of birth is never easy. Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s lonely, sometimes it’s heartbreaking.  If you’d like to know what it really means to emigrate and what the foreigner experience is like, you won’t find it here. Why? Because “everyone’s story is different and this one is only mine.” Presented by KCPL Children & Youth Services Librarian Natalie Lane. Teens and adults welcome.

Book discussions of The Distance Between Us will be held at all KCPL locations:

Thursday, September 25 – 1pm – Chestertown

Monday, September 29 – 6:30pm – North County

Tuesday, October 7 – 1pm – Rock Hall

Saturday, October 18, time TBA, Chestertown Branch

Radio Jaracho

Coming to us from New York City, the band Radio Jaracho will bring a blend of music, dance, and traditions from several regions of Mexico.  All ages welcome.

One Maryland One Book is a program of the Maryland Humanities Council. For more information about any of these events, please call KCPL at 410-778-3636.
