Fake Cops Making Stops

A 21-year-old female was stopped last week on Route 8 by two unknown subjects driving a light colored four-door passenger vehicle with a flashing dash lamp. The two suspects approached the car and asked her to exit the car and then searched her vehicle and person.

The two suspects were described as white males in their 30s, dressed in dark-colored hoodies and jeans with badges on chains around their necks. They also were reported to have been wearing white latex gloves and handcuffs and other items on their belts. The car had a vanity front plate that said Police. One suspect identified himself as Sgt. Tolson of the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff R. Gary Hofmann is advising that there is no one affiliated with the Sheriff’s Office by that name. Sheriff Hofmann is further advising that in the event an unmarked vehicle attempts to stop you and you are unsure it is a police car, acknowledge that you are aware of the car and then drive to a well-lit, and populated location before stopping. Sheriff Hofmann also suggests calling 911 and requesting the dispatcher to verify that it is police car that is attempting to stop you. This also will inform the officer that you are intending to stop at a safe location.

Anyone with possible information related to this event or the suspects is requested to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 410-758-0770. The investigation of this incident remains open.
