Friends of the Library Honor “Reading Pros” Moving on to Middle School

During awards programs and promotion ceremonies at each QACPS elementary school this month, the Friends of Queen Anne’s County Library were delighted to be able to honor one student at each school as a “Reading Pro.” This award acknowledges one 4th or 5th grade student at each of the six county elementary schools who has demonstrated significant achievement in reading and language arts, as selected by teachers and reading specialists at each school.

This is the fourth year that the Friends have honored notable students at each school. This year’s Reading Pro awards were sponsored by the Friends’ generous local partners: Christ Episcopal Church Day School, Kent Island Elks Lodge, and Shore United Bank.

The recipients of the Friends of Queen Anne’s County Library Reading Pro awards for 2019 are:

Anthony Lazo, Bayside Elementary

Reagan Lord, Church Hill Elementary

Jimmy Mejia, Grasonville Elementary

Macey Peterson, Kennard Elementary

Angie Fajardo Rodriguez, Matapeake Elementary

Lorena Reinoso Dias, Sudlersville Elementary

Local author and Friends of the Library member Dr. Carol Franks-Randall coordinates the Reading Pro program. “Promoting literacy is a common vision shared by schools and libraries,’ noted Dr. Franks-Randall. “By collaborating to honor students who have improved their language arts skills as Reading Pros, the Friends of Queen Anne’s County Library and the Queen Anne’s County Public Schools can jointly advance this goal.”

Matapeake Elementary School reading specialist Jennifer Osborne adds, “The Reading Pro award is given to a student who has put forth considerable effort to improve his or her own reading.  They have taken it upon themselves to take charge of their learning through hard work and perseverance.  The recognition gained from this award should encourage them to continue their learning in all subject areas.”

To encourage them to continue their positive reading habits, each Reading Pro received a certificate, a Barnes & Noble gift card, and coupons for free books from the Friends’ Used Book Nooks at Centreville and Kent Island Libraries,
