The Grasonville Senior Center and Chesapeake College Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Training announce the spring Healthy Living for Older Adults classes:
FALL PREVENTION & BALANCE
More than one third of adults aged 65 and older fall each year in the United States. Major risk factors include lack of exercise, vision problems, medication side effects, and home or environmental hazards. This fun and informative class will explore thoughts and concerns about falling, set goals to increase daily activity, and share ideas and problem solve with others in the group. Simple exercises to improve balance and coordination will be conducted each week. New members are welcome to try this fun class which meets Mondays 11:15 am – 12:15 pm, March 5 – June 18, 2012.
BASIC SPANISH
Basic Spanish I, an Introductory to Spanish class designed for adult students with no prior Spanish experience will be offered on Wednesdays 12:30 – 2:00 pm, March 7 – June 6, 2012. The class will focus on basic vocabulary, grammar, culture, and lingos commonly used in different Latin American Countries. By the end of class students will understand, read and write simple and common Spanish sentences.
Basic Spanish II will be offered on Wednesdays 10:30 am – 12:00 pm, March 7 – June 6, 2012. This class is offered to adult students who have had some background in Spanish or have completed the Basic Spanish I class. It will build upon the fundamentals learned in Basic Spanish I. A special Fiesta Party will be held at the end of the session on June 6th. A new monthly Spanish Club is now forming and is open to anyone who would like to attend. Cost is $15 per class.
SPRING ZUMBA CLASS
Participants will learn easy to follow moves to upbeat Latin rhythms combined with resistance training to tone and sculpt the body while burning fat in this 1 hour long class. Class will meet each Friday 11:00 am – 12:00 pm, March 2 – June 15. Registration cost just $15 for the 15 week session.
BALLROOM DANCE LESSONS
Ballroom Dance offers a great low impact cardio workout in a fun social setting. Classes are designed specifically for seniors to improve health through education and awareness training. Certified Dance Instructor Anne Marie Duld will lead the group on Tuesdays 1:00 – 2:00 pm, March 6 – June 19. No prior dance experience is necessary and no partner is needed. Beginners are encouraged to join this fun class; it will have you feeling confident about your dance steps. Registration is just $15 for 15 weeks.
TRADITIONAL RUG HOOKING CLASS
This class is designed to teach students the production and marketing of Traditional Hooked Rugs. As one of America’s oldest art forms, the technique is simple in which woolen fabric is cut into thin strips and then pulled up through a rug foundation creating a rug or wall hanging sure to become a cherished family heirloom. Rug Hooking will be offered on Wednesdays March 7 – May 9 at 12:30 pm. Registration cost just $15 for the nine week course.
ART CLASSES OFFERED
Several Craft Design and Production classes are offered which give emphasis to Ceramic Arts, EZ Strokes Painting, and Oil Painting. Registration fee is $15 per class.
Ceramic Arts will be offered Mondays 12:30pm beginning March 5.
EZ Strokes Painting will be offered Tuesdays 12:30pm beginning March 6.
Oil Painting will be offered Thursdays 9:30am and again at 12:30pm beginning March 1.
COMPUTER CLASSES OFFERED
Basic Social Networking class – this course is designed for senior adults, age 60 or better, with little or no computer knowledge. Instructor Erica Kirby will teach Basic Social Networking with emphasis on Facebook for Dummies on Thursdays at 10:00am. The first class will begin March 1 and run for 5 weeks. Registration fee is $15
FITNESS CLASSES OFFERED
Yoga is offered Mondays 8:30 a.m. beginning March 5.
Line Dance is offered Mondays at 1:30 pm beginning March 5.
Arthritis Exercise is offered on Tuesdays at 10:15 am beginning March 6.
Aerobic Exercise is offered twice a week, 9:00am Tuesdays and 10:30am Thursdays beginning March 6.
Enhancefit, a low impact cardio workout combined with seated exercises and light hand weights, will meet three times each week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. at 10:00am beginning March 12. These popular Healthy Living for Older Adults classes each last 15 weeks.
New participants are encouraged to try any of these great classes. In most classes, certified instructors offer individual assistance within a group setting. Membership to the senior center is free and Registration for classes cost just $15 each. Participants must be age 60 or better.
