On Saturday, October 20, gather the family for a day of fun on The Gunston School campus. Beginning at 8 a.m., Gunston is hosting a 5k run/walk benefit for U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Adam Jacquet, a recent recipient of the Purple Heart and a 2009 Gunston graduate. Last fall, Jacquet was wounded in Afghanistan after an IED was detonated under the military vehicle he was driving, leaving a hole where his feet were. He suffered multiple fractures in his jaw, neck, spine, pelvis, sacrum, and left leg and foot. To assist the Jacquet family, Gunston is donating 100% of race proceeds towards expenses for his recovery. For children ages 12 and under, a Fun Run will take place at 9 a.m. Breakfast and awards will follow the races, and a check will be presented to the Jacquet family at that time. For more information and to register for this event, or to make a donation, visit www.gunston.org.
Beginning at 10 a.m. and concluding at 2 p.m. is Gunston’s Country Fair, an event featuring activities for families young and old. This year’s event features pony rides, sack races, hayrides, pumpkins, inflatable slide and jousting ring, cornhole, hula hoop and pie eating contests, face/pumpkin painting, concert by Chester River Runoff, dog show, cash raffle, chili cookoff, games, carnival fare, bake sale, vendor booths and more. Ninety-eight cash raffle winners will be announced throughout the fair, with prizes valued at $25, $100, $200, $600 and a grand prize of $2,000. Only 1,000 tickets are being sold in advance; cost is $20 per ticket, with proceeds benefiting Gunston’s scholarship fund. For more details and to purchase tickets, visit www.gunston.org/countryfair.
Chester River Runoff, an original bluegrass band from the Eastern Shore, will be performing from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Their honest, unaffected sound features big harmonies, insightful songwriting, and tight instrumental work, qualities that make their sound distinctive and entertaining.
The Gunston School is located at 911 Gunston Road in Centreville, MD. For directions, visit www.gunston.org or call 410.758.0620.
