Habitat for Humanity Choptank and three St Michaels churches have announced plans to build a house on Brooks Lane in St. Michaels. St. Luke’s United Methodist, Union United Methodist and Christ Church – St. Michael’s Parish will provide much of the volunteer labor and raise the funds to cover the $75,000 in construction costs. Habitat Choptank will purchase the lot and provide overall construction supervision. Students from St. Michaels High School will also participate in the building effort.
“This project presents an opportunity to make a difference in St. Michaels,” said Abigail Crozier Nestlehutt associate rector of Christ Church. “Together as a community we can build a simple, decent and affordable home for a deserving family.”
Habitat has already contracted to purchase the lot and expects to go to final settlement in the next 30 – 60 days. Ground breaking is projected for January 2010.
To date, Habitat Choptank has built twelve houses in St Michaels. In keeping with the Habitat model, these homes were built in partnership with people in need. Partner families invest hundreds of hours of their own labor – sweat equity – into building their home and the homes of other Habitat partners. Each home is sold to the home owner at cost with an interest free mortgage. This project is unique, however, as it will be the first time that Habitat Choptank has partnered with St. Michaels churches to provide affordable housing in that community.
Habitat for Humanity of Choptank is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing in Dorchester and Talbot counties. Since its founding in 1992, the organization has worked in partnership with volunteers, churches, community organizations, businesses, and its future homeowners to help 48 local working families achieve homeownership.
