Hurricane Irene is being blamed for the deaths of more than 30,000 chickens in Maryland. Maryland Agriculture Secretary Earl Hance said that despite the poultry losses, overall Maryland livestock fared well with no significant loss. Hance also said high winds and excessive rain caused the remaining sweet corn crop to be blown over, but he added the effect would be small as most had already been harvested.
