Jazz “Unifies” Music Lovers

The summer season has started and the free concert series, “Thursdays in the Park” is already into its second of six shows. On June 28, the Unified Jazz Ensemble (UJE) will take the stage at Millstream Park in Centreville, Maryland for a dynamic performance by masterful musicians. Band members have ample experience not only entertaining, but also educating audiences of all ages and interests. Playing acoustic jazz, the band brings this classic American art form to perfection and encourages audience enthusiasm through their easy-going audience interaction during performances.

Currently based in Annapolis, Maryland, the UJE has a rich performance and initiative history including their part as the flagship ensemble for the highly successful ‘Rural Residency Arts Initiative’ funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. As NEA sponsored artists in residence, the UJE was funded to compose, perform and teach to adults and students. They served as faculty and visiting clinicians at over 100 primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities.

Their many performance credits include a performance for the first lady of the United States, the National Council on the Arts in Washington, concert tours in Japan, Korea and Canada and playing for radio and television. They have also performed at numerous jazz festivals and clubs, sharing stages with jazz greats such as Milt Jackson, Charlie Bird, and Bobby McFerrin.

The Thursdays in the Park series is presented by the Queen Anne’s County Arts Council and sponsored by the Maryland State Arts Council, WCTR, Tidewater Trader, United Way of Queen Anne’s County and Frank Kratovil.
