Joslin Diabetes Center is Changing Its Name

On February 1, the Joslin Diabetes Center will change its name to the University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at Shore Health System.

“This name change reflects the many positive service enhancements that have occurred in recent years and that will continue as we develop this specialty service with our partners at the University of Maryland Medical System,” says Christopher Mitchell, MSN, RN, Director of Outpatient and Emergency Services for Shore Health System.

Under the medical direction of endocrinologist Kenneth Ligaray, MD, the University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at Shore Health System offers a program of medical management and education for individuals diagnosed with diabetes. The clinic is also a resource for people who require medical care for thyroid conditions, osteoporosis and other endocrinology conditions.

“Patients treated at the University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at Shore Health System will receive the same high-quality diabetes care and see the same responsive staff, which includes a certified diabetes nurse and dietitian educators,” explains Jacquie Mowbray, MHA, BSN, RN, Nurse Manager for the University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at Shore Health System.
Mowbray adds, “As part of our ongoing efforts to make our services more convenient, a physician referral is no longer necessary before making an appointment. We work with our patients to help them get appointments in a timely manner and to meet the requirements of their insurance providers.”

The staff of the University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at Shore Health System stays in touch with the physicians who send their patients to the clinic. “Our service is one of many tools available to primary care physicians,” explains Dr. Ligaray. “We communicate with a patient’s primary care physician to give these doctors the information they need to manage the many aspect of their patients’ care.”

Dr. Ligaray adds, “Our goal is to help people understand diabetes and to assist them so that they comply with the medical and lifestyle steps that keep them healthy and prevent healthcare emergencies.”
