June is Flower Month at KIFA

Flower Power is the dominant theme at Kent Island Federation of Arts this June, beginning with ‘The Artists Garden’, an open judged art show starting June 8 and running throughout the entire month.  All the artwork exhibited will be flower and garden oriented.  A free public reception and awards ceremony will be held at KIFA on June 9, 2011 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Also opening on June 8 is KIFA’s Garden Boutique, featuring artisans of all types selling their garden themed arts and crafts in the Member Gallery at KIFA.  Shoppers will choose from jewelry items, gift cards, quilted pieces, wind chimes, basketry, ceramics, and more.  The Boutique will run through June 13 and is open to the public.  A portion of all sales will be donated to KIFA.

Saturday, June 11 and Sunday, June12 are the dates for the ‘Queen Bee’ of the month, KIFA’s second annual ‘Gardens by the Sea’ Garden Tour.  Last year the KIFA garden tour was the most successful fund raising event of 2010.   Over 250 enthusiastic gardeners visited private gardens in and around Kent Island, Grasonville, and Queenstown.   Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.  A sack lunch may be ordered in advance for $8.

Toward the end of June, put aside your serious self and enjoy two flower themed workshops that will require no previous experience and can be lots of fun to do.  On Tuesday, June 21 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, Candace Liccione, owner of Wye River Designs, will be teaching how to create a mosaic Garden Stepping Stone.  This class is open to anyone interested in learning to make a mosaic, choosing your own designs and colors.  $28 per person paid to KIFA.  Class will be held at Wye River Designs in Grasonville.

Fearless Flower Arranging, on June 23, will be a demonstration by Nancy O’Brien, a former award winning florist and Susan Ayres, an avid gardener and certified flower show judge.  They’ll share tons of secrets in making clever, inexpensive arrangements from simple materials using a variety of containers, many of which can be found around the house.  All arrangements will be given away to the audience of this relaxed and entertaining evening event from 7 – 9 pm.  $25 Member/ $30 Non Member.

On June 24, Carol Thomas, an award winning Eastern Shore artist, will teach a one day workshop called Watercolor Flowers, open to all levels of painters.  Students will work from a still life of large fresh flowers in Thomas’ signature quick style.  She’ll teach as she demonstrates various watercolor techniques.  This one day class is from 9:30 – 3:00 pm and students are encouraged to bring a lunch.  $60 Members/ $75 Non Members.
