The Kent Island Federation of Arts (KIFA) in Stevensville, Maryland is planning its third annual “Gardens By The Sea” tour for the weekend of June 9th and 10th, 2012. The tour this year features 9 beautiful gardens all on the water – either directly on the Chesapeake Bay or on inlets of Cox and Thompson Creeks, Eastern Bay, Prospect Bay, and the Wye River. You’ll enjoy a self-guided tour of these gardens with docents greeting you at each garden and pointing out special features that make these seaside gardens unique. There will be plein air artists at work, as well as sculpture displays designed and fabricated by local artists, and a “living shoreline” restoration project in progress at Kirwan’s Landing on Kent Island. Another highlight will be a miniature working train display one of the garden owners has designed for his grandchildren, but it will surely delight any adult with a sense of fun.
In addition to beautiful flowers, gorgeous landscapes, water views and unique gardening techniques, a very special feature of this year’s tour will be the Cascia Vineyards on Kent Island. With the KIFA Garden Tour ticket booklet, visitors will have an opportunity to tour the vineyard and for a nominal additional fee of $5 participate in an optional wine-tasting of some of the area’s best wines while relaxing under umbrellas on the deck overlooking the gardens and the waters of Cox and Thompson Creeks.
Coinciding with the Garden Tour, the KIFA gallery will be featuring it’s annual “The Artists’ Garden” exhibit throughout the month of June featuring works by local and regional artists inspired by gardens. And from June 7th through the 10th, the popular “Garden Boutique” will be in place where visitors may find handcrafted objets d’art for the garden or gift ideas for loved ones.
Tickets are $20 in advance for the Garden Tour, $25 the day of the event, are good for both days and may be purchased online at www.kifa.us or by calling KIFA at 410-643-7424. You may also order directly by sending a check to KIFA at 405 Main St., Stevensville, MD 21666. KIFA is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization partially funded by grants from United Way and CFC.
