The Kent Narrows Sail and Power Squadron will be offering its Piloting Course beginning on Monday, October 1. This is the second in the series of advanced courses and is a natural follow-on to the Seamanship Course but anyone interested in learning more about navigation and GPS can enroll.
The course will be held at the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, for 8 consecutive Mondays starting on Oct.1. The fee for the course is $65 for U.S. Power Squadron members and $165 for non-members. Membership applications will be available at the class.
Some of the topics to be covered in the course include:
• Charts & how to interpret them
• Navigation aids & how they point to safe water
• Plotting courses and determining direction & distance
• Using a compass & converting between true and magnetic
• Use of GPS – setting up waypoints & routes & following them
• Pre-planning safe courses and entering them into a GPS
• Monitoring progress & determining position
• Dead reckoning
• Taking bearings
• What to do when the GPS fails.
