KI Library Hosts Robot City Maker Day

QA-RobotCityKI Library Hosts Robot City Maker Day

On Monday, October 13, the Queen Anne’s County Free Library welcomes FutureMakers, who will host Robot City Maker Day for children, teens, and adults.

The drop-in event begins at 1:00 p.m. and continues through 4:00 p.m. at the Kent Island Branch, 200 Library Circle, Stevensville.

The array of “make and try” experiences include a robotics playground using Primo, a wooden robot with a block-based interface that requires no screen and no reading ability and which is ideal for pre-school students. For elementary students, FutureMakers will guide children through physical computing with MaKey MaKey microcontrollers. An LED sculpture lab will be set up for all children and especially appeals to kindergarten through 5th graders. For teens and adults, FutureMakers will staff an Arduino demonstration and tryout station.

“This will be a unique experience,” said youth services librarian Julie Ranelli. “FutureMakers events have been very popular at the library, and this is the first time we have dedicated an afternoon to high-tech maker events for all ages on a drop-in basis.”

In the past, FutureMakers have helped children at the Kent Island Library make Wigglebotics robotic drawing machines, create and test flying machines in a wind tube, design and launch compressed air rockets, build and race rubber band racecars, and design LED lanterns. Additional information about FutureMakers is available at www.kidsmakethingsbetter.com.

This event is made possible by a donation from the Sinksy-Kresser-Racusin Memorial Foundation. No pre-registration is required. All library programs are free of charge. The library’s complete calendar of children’s events can be viewed at www.qaclibrary.org. QACPS will be closed on the afternoon of October 13.
