On Thursday, June 7, family and friends of the Kiddie Academy community joined together at the Center to start their Community Garden. Those in the school-age class started off the event by singing some pop songs to get moving and ready to get dirty. The ground was pre-tilled and watered by Jeff’s Lawn Care before the event started at 5:30 that evening. The children were so excited to jump in and get their hands dirty that they took handfuls of top soil and sprinkled it over the garden. The parents then started digging rows for the fruit, vegetable, and herb plants. Some of the plants were donated by Wildflower Nursery located on Route 8. The staff took garden rocks that were labeled with the names of the plants and placed them on the end of each aisle so the Community Garden would be organized. Children of all ages joined their parents and started digging holes to give each plant a home. At the end of the evening, the three-year-old class came out with several pitchers of water to feed the plants. They plan to continue the community bond that this has started by having the students care of the plants on a daily basis, and make other garden items, including scarecrows. The food grown in the garden will be given to the families in the community and will also be prepared as a part of bringing new healthy lunches to the school children.
