The Kent Island Federation of Arts is proud to announce three upcoming classes taught by local Kent Island artist Jane Stricker. Ms. Stricker is an art educator, fine art consultant, painter, muralist, digital artist and digital instructor for staff development, wearable art designer, and a contemporary art quilt maker. Her murals grace homes and businesses in Queen Anne and Anne Arundel Counties and her art quilts have been published on the national level. Since her retirement from visual art education in the Anne Arundel Public School system she has continued to refine the level and content of her work.
Digital design
Begins August 7 for 4 Wednesdays from 1 – 4 p.m., this course is an introduction to digital processes and focuses on how to create artistic imagery using photo applications specifically Adobe Elements or Adobe Photoshop. Participants will be introduced to basic Photoshop features and concepts. Participants will learn how to print digitally on fabrics and paper with an inkjet printer. Starting from photos students will, understand basic imaging concepts, basic image editing, file preparation, file scanning, file format, and prepare images for print and presentations. They will work through the techniques utilized to create fiber samples for construction of art quilts, home décor items, or wearable art. A laptop with Adobe Elements or any version of Adobe Photoshop is suggested but not mandatory. KIFA Members $120/Non Members $160.
From Photo to Fiber Art
Beginning September 12 for 4 Thursdays from 1 – 4 p.m., starting from photos, participants will make patterns for stylized and/or realistic imagery and then work through the techniques needed to create example of fiber art. Several small drawing and stitching exercises will help to understand how each process works. Subject matter may include animals, landscapes, flowers or, portraits of people. The class elaborates on a study in appliqué and reverse applique to create art quilts. Knowledge of hand or machine quilting and digital photo manipulation is helpful but not necessary. A laptop with Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Photoshop Elements or a similar photo manipulation application is helpful, but not necessary. Students will be required to provide their own fabrics, a $5.00 fee will be charged for supplies. KIFA Members $120/ Non Members $160
Painting and Printmaking Techniques for Fabric- Surface Design
Beginning on November 11 for 4 Mondays from 1 – 4 p.m., surface design is the art of changing the appearance of natural and synthetic surfaces by the application of traditional, stylized, digitized, techniques. The student will acquire a wide range of skills applicable to a variety of products. This course will involve hands-on practice in traditional media as silk painting, fabric painting, drawing, and screen printing as well as digital methods developing artistic ability, technical skills, and creative innovation. Students will create fiber samples to be utilized on a variety of fashion or home décor objects such as scarves, pillows, jacket inserts, and wall-hangings. In this hands-on 4-day workshop explore a wide variety of resist, painting, and printmaking techniques used on fiber and/or paper to make a fused art quilt sample. This class is a great introduction to those looking to explore surface design for the first time, yet also supplement the skills of intermediate and advanced students. No sewing skills needed! All supplies are provided. A $10.00 supply fee will be required. KIFA Members $120/ Non Members $160.
