KIHS Senior Gio Aguirre Honored with QACPS ‘Artwork of the Month’ for Musical Talent


STEVENSVILLE — Queen Anne’s County Public Schools (QACPS) is proud to announce Kent Island High School senior Gio Aguirre as the first recipient of the district’s QACPS ‘Artwork of the Month’ distinction. Gio, a gifted, self-taught pianist, was celebrated for his outstanding musical talent and dedication, showcased in a video capturing his soulful performance on the KIHS grand piano. His deep passion for music was further highlighted during the November 6, 2024, Board of Education recognition.

Kent Island High School Principal Dan Harding recalled his discovery of Gio’s talent: “I was drawn to the auditorium by the incredible sound of piano music echoing through the hall as I was in the cafeteria. When I entered, I saw Gio performing in front of a crowd of students gathered around the grand piano. His talent is a tremendous gift to our school community, so I was proud to nominate him for this honor.”

Gio’s music further captivated the public at the November 6, 2024, Queen Anne’s County Board of Education meeting, where Principal Harding invited him to perform a special piece for both those in attendance and viewers watching live on QAC-TV.

“Gio’s performance and his recognition as the first QACPS ‘Artwork of the Month’ emphasize the positive impact the arts can have on our students and in our community,” shared Michael Bell, QACPS Supervisor of Visual and Performing Arts. “It’s powerful to see a principal take the time to recognize and elevate student achievement like this, too.”

In addition to his musical talent, Gio is an outstanding student and athlete. Recently awarded the prestigious College Board National Recognition Award, Gio holds a 4.07 weighted GPA and has excelled in six Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Beyond the classroom, he is an active member of the cross-country, swimming, and track teams at Kent Island High School.

“It is obvious Gio has a natural talent and gift of music in addition to his high academic performance. I’m thankful he shared just a few minutes of that talent with us,” shared Dr. Patricia Saelens, QACPS Superintendent of Schools. “He definitely has a bright future ahead of him.”

As Gio approaches graduation, his dedication to excellence in the arts, academics, and athletics serves as an inspiring example for his peers. QACPS is honored to recognize Gio Aguirre’s exceptional achievements and his role as a leader within the school and greater community.
