Lend a Hand: Character Counts! and CommUNITY Mentoring Celebrate Volunteers

STMS_Trio_of_Singers_Ally_Sweiderk_Alison_Ogden_Jennifer_Stafford_Teacher_ (230 x 188)With 105 character coaches, 12 mentors and countless other volunteer support staff, the Character Counts! Advisory Council and CommUNITY Mentoring Board have much to be thankful for this year. The estimated monetary value of the time these generous volunteers spent in the classrooms and with individual students this school year is $80,150.40. The number is impressive, but more impressive is the positive impact these community members have on the youth of Queen Anne’s County.

They are the reason the Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship) have reached thousands of students in Queen Anne’s County over the past fourteen years. Some students received positive individual attention to help them reach their full potential.

To recognize and thank these community members, a celebration and dinner was held at the Community Services Building on May 9, 2013. The volunteers were treated to a catered dinner, and each was recognized with a certificate, a pin and a few special quotes from students about what they enjoyed most this year. Special recognition was given to Character Coach and Advisory Council Member Mary Ruth Meredith for her 14 years of volunteer service with Character Counts! Two members of the Stevensville Middle School Choir, Ally Sweiderk and Alison Ogden, and their instructor, Jennifer Stafford, performed three songs for the dinner crowd.

Jacki Carter, Character Counts! Coordinator, remarked about the celebration, “It is always a joy to have volunteers, their families and school personnel come together to celebrate our “can-do” attitude in building and maintaining character in Queen Anne’s County. I am privileged to work with a wonderful group who believe in what they are doing. It shows, and they do make a difference. We are truly a community-driven organization that has increased the recognition and impact of Character Counts! in our county through character coaching and community mentoring. To provide a lovely dinner is the least that the Advisory Council and I can do for them”
