Lend A Hand – Gail Ruppe: Serving with the United Way of Queen Anne’s County

By Avra Sullivan

When a friend and United Way board member asked Gail Ruppe to join the United Way of Queen Anne’s County, explaining the impact they have, and his own passion, she quickly accepted. While also involved in volunteer work with QAC arts council, CASA of Kent and Queen Anne’s, and several others, Gail says the United Way stands out as they help such a variety of people in the area. Serving 22 agencies, she has been able to help the diverse needs of her community, from the very young, to the elderly.

Seven years later she has not only stayed with the United Way of Queen Anne’s County, but has chaired the annual Blooms for United Way, each of those years. Over that time, she has watched the event blossom in growth, giving them the ability to “allocate more funds to the agencies we support and directly help more people in Queen Anne’s county.” She personally loves the event, usually held in April, as she says it truly is QA county “most beautiful event”. “The heart of the event is that everyone can leave with a plant or flower and as it grows, they hopefully will have a constant reminder of their support for United Way and the agencies we support.”

When asked why she volunteers, she says: “My dad was a leader in community service to so many organizations. I learned early on how important it is to become involved and to support the community where you live. I lost him nine years ago, and the community service I do is his legacy to me and is a tribute to him.”

United Way of Queen Anne’s County was established in 1990 in response to public requests for an agency to coordinate community service organizations. They offer ample opportunities for volunteer assistance to the community. Person interested in serving with the Queen Anne’s United Way should call 410-643-6288. They can also visit them at www.
