Sally Boden loves her community and says she feels honored to be able to give something back. For the past year, Sally has volunteered as a Share Group Leader for Celebrate Recovery, a Christ-centered 12-step program that helps people overcome and deal with the hurts and hang-ups of life.
She was approached by Celebrate Recovery leader Cathy Trimms and thought it was a great opportunity to help. There are no problems too big or too small for the group, and it is not limited to substance abuse. In fact, Sally says that only about one-fourth of the members are recovering from a substance abuse addiction or lifestyle. “It’s really a recovery program for life,” she says and adds that she has seen lives changed, people becoming healthier and more whole.
Celebrate Recovery encourages people to make healthier decisions. The program can alleviate the lonely and isolated feeling many have as they seek freedom from their own struggles or are dealing with those of a family member. A support system is in place to create a safe and nurturing environment where you can be heard. “One of the main things I have learned since helping with the celebrate recovery program is how to be a better listener,” says Sally.
The Celebrate Recovery program is held at Kent Island United Methodist Church, 2739 Cox Neck Road in Chester. Meeting times are 7:00–9:00 pm each Wednesday night throughout the year. Child care is provided at no cost. Anyone is welcome and confidentiality within the group is strictly adhered to. For anyone wishing to volunteer, there are many opportunities.
While becoming a group leader entails additional training, it is provided as part of the program, and no previous experience is required. “All you really need is a willing heart.” Sally says there are many other ways to help. Setting up for meetings, helping to greet people, assisting with and arranging child care, and providing refreshments are all ways you can get involved. “It is truly a team effort with so many people helping to make the group a success, but I have seen it offer so much hope and encouragement to those in need.”
Sally moved to the Kent Island area in 1980 and was a teacher in the local school system. Retired now, she enjoys volunteering with her husband, who also assists with the Celebrate Recovery Program. For more information you can email celebraterecovery@kiumc.org or call 410-643-5361.
