Meet the Artist: Celebrating KIFA’s 50th Anniversary & Honorary Recipient of This Year’s Shore Update Best of the Best Event

wende_Pic (200 x 263)Wende Woodham of Stevensville is a member of the Kent Island Federation of Art and a self taught fiber artist specializing in mixed media and woven ribbon art with a landscape and bay theme. Each piece is designed by Wende and constructed of hand cut fibers from a large repertoire of ribbons and trims collected from throughout the United States, Europe, and the Orient with some designed by the artist herself. Her unique work is something most people have never seen. Wende’s unusual use of color combination, texture mix, and weaving technique offers her the versatility of creating art pieces in both nostalgic and contemporary styles. Her designs are very personal and always refreshingly different. Her wall art is priced from $110 for a small 5 x 7 piece to $2000 for larger commissioned pieces. You may also purchase an encased pendant with a miniature original for $75-$85. Wende’s favorite master artist is Howard Behrens, a Caribbean landscape artist who she admires for his use of vibrant colors, like those hues seen in her own pieces. She is also fond of Georgia O’Keeffe and her southwest landscapes.

Wende participates in the January Member’s Challenge Show and the Holiday Boutique at KIFA. Her work can also be seen on display at The Fiber Arts Center of the Eastern Shore (FACES) which opened last July in Denton, or on display at a permanent exhibit at Ginger Cove Community in Annapolis. She has also exhibited at the Tilghman Island Inn in Talbot County. Wende feels the best part of being a member of KIFA is the diversity of its members that inspire each other. She is currently co-chair of ArtEast, a round table of Eastern Shore artists that meet the last Tuesday of each month at the Kent Island Branch of the QAC library at 9:30 am. It is an artists support group comprised of many KIFA artists that discuss matters pertaining to artists where they critique each other’s work and inspire each other to create.
