The mayor and council of Chestertown passed an ordinance regulating docking and parking at town-owned waterfront property. Ordinance 06-2010, introduced by Town Manager Bill Ingersoll, prohibits unauthorized docking at town dock, where the schooner Sultana and the Echo Hill Outdoor School boats tie up, the primary focus of the ordinance. This was in response to unauthorized boats tying up to the new floating kayak launch platform installed at the Cannon Street dock in June.
The ordinance would require owners to remove boats within 24 hours of being notified. Notification could be served by placing a notice on the boat. Under an amendment introduced by Councilman Jim Gatto, the ordinance treats each day in violation as a separate offense, subject to an additional fine. Owners would also be liable for the costs of towing and storing their vessels. Ingersoll said the town would mark the areas where parking and docking are permitted.
