New Classes at Kent Island Federation of Arts

Jay Fleming, an award winning outdoorsman and photographer, will teach two photography classes for anyone interested in producing breathtaking Eastern Shore wild life and landscape photos. Jay’s passion in photography came from his father, Kevin Fleming, a former National Geographic Photographer and now a book publisher. At the age of 14 Jay realized that he could take pictures also. Using one of Kevin’s hand-me-down rigs, a Nikon film camera and an old 300mm lens from the geographic days, Jay accompanied his dad to a rookery island in Delaware. With one of his photographs taken on the trip he won grand prize in the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2004 Wildlife of Wetlands photography contest. Since graduating from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 2009 Jay has documented his fishing and camping trips and worked in the field of fisheries.

Jane Halliwell Green will again teach an upcoming watercolor painting class at Kent Island Federation of Arts. Jane has a unique love of textile design as well as her beloved ‘color wheel’ work. With this background she brings another technique called ‘negative painting’. Jane says “You may notice that I often paint around the outside of a shape rather than paint it directly. I divide negative painting into two categories. The first is a planned composition with a detailed drawing in place before the first under-painting is applied. The second way is very intuitive in that a concept leads the artist to apply the under painting in a certain way. Both approaches require practice, but I recommend that new painters begin with a drawing.
