The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal has closed its investigation of a fatal house fire in Rock Hall on April 27th without pinning down the cause. Investigators determined the fire started in a second-floor bathroom of the house that was built around 1925. Given the extensive damage the 1,088 square-foot wood-frame home sustained, a cause could not be determined. Arson was not suspected. The body of Robert E. “Gene” Van Kirk, 67, was located in a rear bedroom on the second floor. The body of Linda S. Van Kirk, 59, was located in a front bedroom. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that both died from smoke inhalation. The Van Kirks, who were married for 32 years, moved to Rock Hall from East Windsor, N.J., in 2004.
