Nurturing Body, Soul & Spirit

By Sandra Zunino

On Saturday, May 14, the Chesapeake Church of Christ in Grasonville will host Healthy Hands For Healthy Hearts, a wellness fair to help members of the community connect physically, emotionally and spiritually on a healthy level.

The free open-house event will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and focus on health and safety issues for women, children and seniors. Representatives from the Queen Anne’s County Health Department, Corsica Women’s Health, VFW – Grasonville, Mid-Shore Council on Family Violence, the Department of Natural Resources and others will be available to offer information about services available in the area and safety advice.

“We wanted to provide this event for the people in the community in a way that really helps minister to the whole of the person in body, soul and spirit,” says Scott Lambert, Chesapeake Church of Christ Minister. “We certainly think that our physical health, our emotional health and our spiritual health are unified whole within the person.”

Chaired by congregation member Jack Boyer, the event is the result of a group effort by the church. While planning started last fall, the inspiration goes back even further. “We have been talking about it for several years,” says Minister Lambert. “This is our first effort and the church has gotten together to get the word out and we are looking forward to it.”

“If we do well, we hope we can turn it into a regular event that addresses different demographics or focuses on different areas of emphasis,” he adds. One critical element in the planning was trying to offer a good balance of information and available state and county resources that folks in the community will be interested in learning about such as WIC, immunizations, nutrition, etc.

At 11:00 a.m., Dr. John J. LaFerla from Corsica Women’s Health will speak about Women’s Cancer. At 12:00 p.m. Steven E. Hoofnagle, Attorney at Law, will lead a discussion on Estate Planning, and at 1:00 p.m. Dr. LaFerla will be back to address the topic of A Healthy Lifestyle.

The Department of Natural Resources will bring their van with information and training tools for water safety. The Chesapeake Church of Christ will discuss spiritual health and hope.

The event will take place rain or shine as tables and booths will be set up within the Fellowship Hall while the scheduled lectures will take place in the Sanctuary. Additionally, private classrooms will be available in case anyone wishes to discuss sensitive information with a representative. Healthy refreshments and face painting for children will also be available.

The Chesapeake Church of Christ is a non-denominational Christian-based religious organization dedicated to serving God and individuals in the community.
