Maryland Senator Barbara Mikulski has asked National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to assess the threat of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill to the Chesapeake Bay and the waters off Maryland’s coast. The Democratic lawmaker says her constituents are asking if the spill will reach Ocean City and if it will affect the Bay, which is already under stress. Mikulski is a co-sponsor of legislation to curb new offshore drilling and require BP to reimburse the federal government for money spent on cleaning up the spill.
