Gouache paint, similar to watercolor, is modified to make it an opaque painting medium. Its usage dates back to the fourteenth century and brings a different depth and character than that of traditional watercolor paints. In a five week class at the Queen Anne’s County Arts Council’s Centre for the Arts, students will explore the wonder of this older medium. Though few contemporary artists work with gouache, it is a perfect match for painting birds. The journey begins with information on avian anatomy as an aide to understanding their characteristics. Students will then learn a variety of painting techniques with an emphasis on painting birds. Materials: registered students will receive a supplies list. Bring a bag lunch. Register by 9/13. Artist and instructor Ric Conn has been a student of nature and ornithology for much of his life. He has travelled extensively throughout the Eastern seaboard, across the country and beyond to observe, record and paint wildlife. He studied at the Corcoran College of Art and the Maryland Institute College of Art and teaches regularly to students of all ages in locations around the Mid-Atlantic.
Classes are held on Thursdays, beginning September 20 and through October 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The registration deadline is September 13. The cost is $105 for members of the Arts Council, $125 for non-members.
Center for the Arts classes are designed to renew existing artistic interests, and to develop new skills.
