Painting Birds in Gouache

Gouache paint, similar to watercolor, is modified to make it an opaque painting medium. Its usage dates back to the fourteenth century and brings a different depth and character than that of traditional watercolor paints. In a five week class at the Queen Anne’s County Arts Council’s Centre for the Arts, students will explore the wonder of this older medium. Though few contemporary artists work with gouache, it is a perfect match for painting birds. The journey begins with information on avian anatomy as an aide to understanding their characteristics. Students will then learn a variety of painting techniques with an emphasis on painting birds. Materials: registered students will receive a supplies list. Bring a bag lunch. Register by 9/13. Ages 16 and above.
