Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco and other drug, and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the United States. The newly formed Talbot County Parent Coalition has purchased red ribbons to be distributed to students by the Student Government Association at Sts. Peter & Paul High School, in recognition of Red Ribbon week.

The Parent Coalition, which is made up of a group of parents concerned about our children’s safety, especially when it comes to alcohol and drugs, offered to purchase the red ribbons for the school. According to Mary Kramer, chairman of the Parent Coalition, “Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country and is an ideal way for students and adults to unite and take a visible stand against substance abuse.”

The Sts. Peter & Paul Student Government Association was interested in participating with this year’s campaign to bring student awareness of the dangers of alcohol and other drug abuse. The ribbons will be distributed to all students in the school, emphasizing personal commitment to a drug-free lifestyle through the symbol of the Red Ribbon. As the school also celebrates Spirit week, the students participating in Red Ribbon week will be displaying red ribbons on their lockers throughout the school.
