People of Color Conference (PoCC) and Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC)

PoCc_SDLC. 2013 (400 x 223)On December 4-7, six students and three faculty members from The Gunston School attend the People of Color Conference (PoCC) and the Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) held at The National Harbor in Washington, DC.

While the faculty members, which included Christie Grabis, Juan Angarita and Alison Vooris, attended the PoCC, the students, Natalie Purpora, Damon Callis, Andrew Morman, Hanna Gonzalez, Kaoe Clarke and Blynda Chen attended the SDLC.

Thirteen hundred high school students, from all across the country, attended the SDLC.

During the conference, students learned about aspects of discrimination, micro-aggression and explored the question: “What is diversity?”.

At the conclusion of the conference, all teachers and students came together in a sharing space that had been created for student-led dialogues. It is the hope that these students, with the support of faculty, will help Gunston to further its mission of “embracing diverse ideas, perspectives and individuals.”
