Proposed Flush Tax Increase

A legislative committee is suggesting lawmakers in Maryland triple the so-called flush tax to $90 in an effort to help clean up the Chesapeake Bay. The 28-member task force says the state should raise the flush fee to $60 next year and then to $90 by 2015. The first increase would help pay for upgrades to sewage treatment plants around the state. The next round of revenue would help cover the costs of the federal government’s “pollution diet” for the bay. Some $385-million is needed to help upgrade sewage treatment plants around the state. The governor’s office says it will take the recommendation under consideration.
