Centreville, MD – Queen Anne’s County Public Schools (QACPS) is excited to announce a new Water Safety Experience for third-grade students, which took place at the Queen Anne’s County Family YMCA. This pilot program with Kennard Elementary School (KES) was designed to enhance students’ knowledge and skills in water safety. “We are thrilled to provide this unique learning opportunity for our students to build confidence and awareness in the water,” said Michael Page, Supervisor of Instruction at QACPS.

Through a partnership with the YMCA, students were engaged in both classroom instruction and hands-on activities in the pool, learning essential water safety techniques in a safe and controlled environment. “To be given the opportunity to teach our local elementary school students crucial water safety skills was a wonderful experience. We are arming these students with crucial, potentially lifesaving, skills that mean the world to us”, said Colby Tuma, Aquatics Director, at the YMCA.

This initiative emphasizes the importance of water safety and equipping students with the fundamental skills needed to stay safe in and around water. “The collaboration with the YMCA was such an amazing experience for our 3rd graders. Thank you again for this fantastic opportunity for our students!”, said Michelle Carey, KES Principal.

This initiative reflects QACPS’s ongoing commitment to offering enriching educational experiences that promote student well-being and safety.  QACPS looks forward to the success of this pilot program and expanding water safety education to all 3rd graders in the future.
