Queen Anne’s County 4-H Park Receives Major Infrastructure Upgrades

The Queen Anne’s County 4-H Park was the recipient of a total $1.5 million grant from the Rural Economic Development Fund, in partnership with the state of Maryland in 2022/2023. The monies were also approved by the Queen Anne’s County Commissioners. The funding facilitated significant infrastructure improvements within the 4-H Park property located on Route 18, between Centreville and Queenstown.

“The 4-H park here in Queen Anne’s County has needed these improvements and upgrades for years. The Park hosts our county fair and was the location for the chicken festival in past years, so it is a focal point in our community. It’s important because it sees so many visitors every year that it should always look it’s best,” said County Commissioner Phil Dumenil.

The grant covered a range of upgrades including electric, plumbing, broadband, stormwater management, paving, barn improvements and enhancements, and security measures. “The 4-H Park is a vital part of Queen Anne’s County, providing a place for education, community gatherings, and agricultural awareness. The enhancements made possible by the $1.5 million grant reflect our commitment to preserving this important resource,” stated County Commission President, Jim Moran.

A primary focus of the project is to prepare the park for the annual Queen Anne’s County 4-H Fair, an eagerly anticipated event that draws over 13,000 visitors from across the state each year. Additionally, the park hosts Agricultural Awareness Week, providing valuable educational experiences for local students and showcasing the importance of agriculture in the region.

“The Queen Anne’s County 4-H Park holds immense significance as a center for education, agriculture, and community engagement,” said Alan Eck, previous park board chairman and member of the grant subcommittee. “This grant funding allowed us to modernize and fortify our infrastructure, ensure that we can continue to serve the needs of our community for generations to come,” according to Berl Jastram, 4-H Park Board Buildings and Grounds committee chairman.

Key areas of improvement include:

Electric: Upgrades to lighting and electrical systems in existing buildings and barns, as well as enhancements to electric hookups for campers.
Plumbing: Installation of year-round water sources throughout the park.
Broadband: Improvements to cell service and Wi-Fi connectivity for enhanced communication and accessibility.
Stormwater Management: Implementation of strategies to address drainage issues and mitigate rain-related hazards.
Paving: Installation of new pavement for handicap parking, walkways, and roadways.
Barns: Upgrades to barn facilities to accommodate animals and exhibitors, as well as weather protection enhancements.
Security: Enhancement of perimeter fencing for improved safety and security.
These projects are slated for completion ahead of the Queen Anne’s County Fair, which starts on August 12, 2024. A formal Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will be held at a future date to be announced.
