February 1- The Art of Tatoo, Friday 5 – 7:30 p.m., Ages 18+ Meet Island Ink Tattoo owner Tommy Cathers for a discussion on the origin of the art of tattooing and its progression to American culture. The history of tattoos and shift in their acceptance as a popular form of body art is a compelling one and yields information about cultural norms and artistry. February 2- The Art of Penjing: Dr. Akey Hung, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., All ages, Penjing is the recreation of the mystical beauty of nature in a container using natural materials such as plants, rocks, soil, and water. Tree penjing developed into bonsai in Japan. Dr. Hung will give an illustrated power point presentation on the unique characteristics of this Oriental art, different schools of penjing, the basic styles of tree penjing and bonsai, techniques used in growing them and the differences between penjing and a bonsai. February 2- Basic Beading: Anklet, Saturday, 1 – 4 p.m., Ages 12 + Choose from two types of beading techniques: a floating style or a bead to bead anklet. Learn how to attach soldered rings and clasps and basic methods for crimping, stringing, color choices, sizing and spacing. Materials: class fee includes tools, beads and string supplies. Bring scissors and a 12” straight edge with metric measure. Instructor Jinny Guy is a self-taught artist who combines a love of color, fashion and fun to make stunning jewelry and jewelry sets. February 23- Forth Annual “Small Works: Exhibit & Raffle” Reception and Drawing of Winning Tickets, Saturday 6-8 p.m. Winning tickets for each work of art will be drawn while attendees enjoy delicious treats and a cash bar. Winners who are present may take artwork home at the end of the evening. Raffle tickets are $5 per ticket or 7 tickets for $30 and remain on sale through closing of exhibit. March 3- Jewelry Pendant Workshop, Ages 13+, Sunday 1 – 4 p.m A fun and creative afternoon of jewelry making. Use different crafting techniques, make jewelry pendants from Friendly Plastic, Utee (ultra thick embossing powder using a melting pot), microwave fused glass and Sculpey clay. Try different types of pendant materials while learning how to expand your jewelry making expertise. Instructor Candace Liccione owns and operates Wye River Designs where she teaches mosaics, jewelry making, collage, crafts, mixed media arts, rubberstamping, and more.
