Rohanna Dance Sets the Stage: New Owners and Open House Welcome New Dancers

By Avra Sullivan

Rohanna Dance Productions is gearing up for a fantastic year of dance. Under new owners Emily and Barbara Martin, classes in tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, musical theatre and more for ages two to adult start on August 27th. Artistic Director Emily Martin has been a student of Rohanna for several years. She has performed with the Washington Ballet, studied under Linda Fitzgerald at Anne Arundel Community College and was a member of the professional company Pushing Progress in New York City for two years. Her mother Barbara Martin is taking the role of Executive Director to help with the business side of the studio.

Barbara knows that dance can be intense, particularly ballet and competitive dance. It takes a lot of discipline and dedication, but she says they work hard to balance the intensity with fun. “We have sleepovers at the studio,” she says, among other activities. The time away from the barre (the stationary handrail used for warm-ups) encourages camaraderie between the dancers. “It’s not just about individual discipline,” says Barbara “it’s also about teamwork. You count on each other to play a part, and you learn from each other.”

The studio has expanded in the last year to include new parent viewing areas and a dancer recreation area. The Martins hope to expand in the future and to bring in more guest teachers and choreographers as well as coordinate field trips to New York City. All of Rohanna’s instructors have a degree in dance and have worked as professional dancers, choreographers or instructors. They have real world knowledge of the craft that they can impart to students.

On August 25th from 1-4pm, Rohanna will hold an open house for new and prospective students. Interested dancers and their parents can meet the instructors, tour the studio and see demonstrations by current dancers. The studio also is offering $10 off registration for that day only.

More information can be found on their website at www.rohannadance.com or by calling 410-349-3100. The studio is located at 1572 Whitehall Road in the Jemal’s Bay Shopping Center in Annapolis.
