Follow the exciting tale of a young lacrosse player who helps an abandoned otter pup in the newest release by Green Author Jennifer Keats Curtis, Saving Squeak: The Otter Tale.
When a young human hero discovers an orphaned baby otter in the park, he desperately wants to keep the adorable animal as a pet. Fortunately, he quickly learns about otters and the importance of rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife that find themselves among humans.
This unusual new story is based on the work of real-life wildlife rehabilitator Suzanne McBride and two otters, named Squeak and Bubbles, who reside at the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons Island, Maryland. McBride, a Virginia resident, who helps return healthy river otters and other creatures to the wild, is featured in the story along with doting aquarist Linda Hanna who takes care of the otters at the museum.
Children’s author and veteran journalist Jennifer Keats Curtis writes about the environment because she wants to help bring children closer to the animals in their own backyards. The University of Maryland graduate can often be found among students and teachers talking about literacy and conservation. She regularly presents writing workshops to elementary school students. The author of five books about bay-related animals, she is excitedly awaiting the release of another book, SEAHORSES, in 2011. Marcy Dunn Ramsey began her fine art career as a printmaker, but has been painting almost exclusively for the last 18 years in her studio on the Chester River in Chestertown, MD. This is the second Schiffer book the duo has produced together.
